08/09/08 Why don't Republicans want employment-based health insurance? (Managed Care Matters)
Published 08/09/08 01:16:59
I've been considering why Republican politicians and pundits favor de-linking employment and health insurance. Portability is certainly a good reason; some workers can't leave their jobs for fear they will lose coverage, or won't be able to get new coverage...

[David Warren, Ottawa Citizen] For instance, all parties are committed to preserving Canada?s dysfunctional socialist health care system. All are committed to the continued heavy regulation of private enterprise generally, and to choking small business in particular with red tape. All are committed to maintaining a crippling tax burden, and a tax collection system with [...]

07/09/08 Obama vs. McCain on Tax Cuts (Bruno and the Professor)

Handy little calculator for figuring out what your tax cut would be under an Obama administration. Clearly designed to remind people that, unless you make over $500k/yr, Obama?s plan means less taxes for you. Of course, I don?t really go for the whole tax cutting argument. Taxes are used to buy government services, and [...]

07/09/08 Study: Workers to pay more for health care (Contrapuntal News)

From the AP : On average, health care costs will go up by an estimated 5.7 percent next year for both workers and their employers, the study found. That repeats this year?s 5.7 percent hike and a 6.1 percent jump in 2007. And how much do you think workers' wages have risen? Hmmm...
07/09/08 McCain tax plan: "Bush's plan on steroids" (AMERICAblog)
Published 07/09/08 19:05:00
Naturally McCain is going to promote a radical plan , because the owner of twelve houses thinks that the US has experienced significant economic progress, so why not more? More tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, higher costs for health care (for those who need to pay attention to such costs) and more cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Despite making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and being married to a beer heiress worth $100 million, McCain still gladly accepts his Social Security money but wants everyone else to cut back. It must be nice to live in such a ivory tower, where the cost of living or staying afloat financially doesn't matter. Look at how much is being paid by employees today and then think about how expensive it will be on a personal basis when McCain cuts the tax break for employers on health care and it's all thrown into your lap with a pathetic little tax credit, which is useless. Talk about expensive! Also consider how poorly US money has been spent (and lost) in Iraq while John McCain has made that his number one issue. He can't even watch over spending in Iraq yet expects 300 million Americans to wade through the free-for-all health care theory that he wants to promote. Besides wealthy elites like McCain, who can afford the cost and time for such a plan? Not everyone has a team of personal accountants on call to figure it all out.
